When Can Hearing Loss Be Diagnosed?

Hearing loss is a familiar condition for most people as it does not happen on rare occasions only yet there is a need to be informed. Below are some guidelines with regard to hearing loss and its possible origins and also some ways to avoid the problem altogether. Hearing loss should no longer be seen as a burden since technological improvements have made treatments available commercially.

Age is a detrimental factor responsible for the regular occurrence of gradual hearing loss in most people. A person may ask if nationality or race as well as gender can contribute to the increased possibility of experiencing hearing loss but the answer is that those factors only have a minimal role in the problem as age is the number one factor which usually d If the hearing loss problem encountered by a person is in a stage where treatment is still an option, there is an opportunity to seek professional help in handling the matter.

Most people can say they have an adequate knowledge of what hearing loss is but it is essential for one to understand what hearing is per se and the problem begins with this lack of know how. Why is the knowledge of what a hearing loss impediment is necessary for most patients to understand other than the fact that they are facing the problem themselves? Before a person can understand how hearing is impaired, it is best to familiarize oneself with the different areas of the ears and how these regions work to make the person feel the sensation of hearing sounds.

The ear is made up of three regions namely the inner, outer, and middle ear and these work in synch to make people hear and process sounds. The pinna is the external area of the ear and it is through this outer section that sound waves pass through first. Sound waves enter the outer ear and heads towards the middle ear where the eardrum is found and as the waves of sound pass through, the eardrum vibrates.

Three bones work together to transfer sound waves to the inner ear from the middle ear and these bones are known as the malleus, incus, and stapes. Vibrations from the middle ear travel to the inner ear where these are tuned by the cochlea which is a part of the inner ear composed of many tiny hairs. The final step in the hearing process is when the hearing nerve receives the sound impulses and sends them to the person’s brain.

It is quite possible to encounter hearing loss that is conductive, sensory, or neural in kind. Problems with the outer or middle ear can cause a person to develop conductive hearing loss but this can easily be managed and the condition is rather minor in severity. The sensory form of hearing loss is more serious than the previous one discussed as this is more permanent and the ability to hear is reduced to very minute levels.

For sensory hearing loss, a person can experience hearing muffled sound patterns and this often results in affecting the persons speaking capacity as well. The third kind of hearing loss is referred to as neural hearing loss wherein the problem lies in the connection of the cochlea to the brain itself. Basically, with neural hearing loss the nerve that sends the sound signals to the brain is damaged.

Missing sounds or not hearing any at all proves much of a challenge to the everyday man. It is not easy to deal with social gatherings considering a hearing impediment. Missing sounds can deem a person as apathetic or simply too uninterested to participate in a conversation.

Are there other possible causes that can bring about a hearing loss impediment to a person? Being exposed to high decibel sound waves can be the major reason behind potential loss of hearing. Earplugs are a simple tool which can prevent damaging the ears when in noisy areas.

Hearing loss can be brought about by sickness. A physician may advise a person to switch prescriptions so as not to worsen hearing loss. To avoid the worsening of a hearing loss problem, seek for a physician’s opinion right away.

Hearing loss need not be a problem since it can be treated via numerous available options. Before anything else, a person should be given a correct diagnosis with regard to the onset of a hearing loss impediment. The correct form of treatment can be applied after the diagnosis has been received.

A person suffering from hearing loss can choose to use hearing aids or go for an ear surgery if needed. Hearing aids are made available through technological advancements giving assistance to people with minor hearing impediments. A hearing aid needs medical expertise before it can be handed to a patient where the persons hearing condition is completely assessed.

Hearing loss when at its more advanced stages can be aided through cochlear implants. Hearing ability can be restored by means of a cochlear implant for patients who have profound hearing loss. Usually the device is placed by the inner ear and there are some occurrences where it can be placed on the brain itself.

Ear surgery is a procedure best left to the skills of qualified medical personnel. Avoiding the problem is better than facing it at its onset. Keep a level head with the origins of hearing loss problems and adopt a workable preventive lifestyle to combat it.

What Are Your Thermometer Options?

The temperature of the blood is being measured when body temperature is being checked. The equipment being used will effect the accuracy of the reading, as will the location of the body where the temperature is checked. There are the classic thermometers, however recently the temporal thermometer has come out as well.

Before proceeding to use a thermometer, it’s always very important to read the manufacturer’s instructions. Specific operating instructions will be given, and it may also be necessary to calibrate the thermometer before the first use or even before every use.

Many thermometers beep when they are completed, and some let you store readings over a period of time. However, some require you to clear out the previous measurement before doing a new one. Manufacturers also provide specific instructions on how to clean and sterilize your thermometer.

There are a number of helpful note in the instruction guides for these tools, such as suggestions about when not to take someone’s temperature. Times when a temperature can be most misleading are right after strenuous exercise, after a bath or after eating or drinking.

When taking an oral reading, the temperature of the blood in the bottom of the tongue is what the reading is based on. You should allow at least fifteen minutes after eating before testing the child’s temperature orally. When the thermometer is in place, the child should hold it steady with his or her tongue and lips, taking care not to actually bite down on the thermometer. Three to four minutes will be required for an accurate measurement.

Doing an Axillary Reading: This is a measurement of the temperature of the blood in the axillary artery, in the armpit. Using your fingertips, you can feel for the position of this artery. It’s best to remove the child’s shirt or top first, then place the end of the thermometer directly over the artery. Help the child to fold their arm across their chest to hold the thermometer in place. As with oral readings, 3 - 4 minutes is typically enough time; digital thermometers, however, usually beep when they are complete.

Doing a Rectal Reading (if necessary): Use an appropriate lubricant to lubricate the end of the thermometer. If the manufacturer’s instructions do not recommend one, ask your pharmacist. Have the child lie down on a flat, comfortable surface, such as a changing table, a bed, or even your lap with an infant. With your hand gently but firmly near the base of the spine to hold the child still, gently insert the thermometer approximately one inch into the anus; you should feel no resistance–if there is resistance, stop–do not try to force the thermometer in. Hold the thermometer between your thumb and index finger, with your hand cupped around the child’s bottom. to keep it in place until the reading is complete.

Using Alcohol Tests To Save Lives

Everybody anticipates the opportunity to finally be able to legally drive. It is understandably a very exciting time, and acts as the first step toward independence. Somehow, it feels like when you finally learn how to drive you are an adult. It could be because of the comfort and the idea of driving your own car when others cannot, or maybe the fact that you will not have to commute anymore. No matter what the reason may be, learning how to drive is an event looked forward to by almost every teenager.

Sadly, there are people who abuse their ability to drive. These people believe that driving is an entitlement, which is why they oftentimes take road rules for granted. They think that everything they do is fine, and everybody should adjust to them instead of the other way around. They do not seem to understand that driving is a privilege, and it should be practiced and mastered first. Knowledgeable people are aware of this, and they do everything they can to make sure they do not pose as a hazard to other people.

However, bad driving is not the only thing that is endangering other people on the road. It’s bad enough that there are people who don’t train themselves first before driving. What’s worse is those people who are good enough at driving yet seem to make terrible decisions when going on the road. One particularly concerning problem is drunk driving. It sucks because the people who drive drunk are usually capable drivers, yet they surprisingly make poor decisions that jeopardize other people’s safety. Drunk driving results in so many deaths and injuries every year that you would think people would just stop doing them altogether. Confusingly enough, that is not the case.

Thankfully, there have been recent advancements made that make it easier for the proper authorities to determine a person’s alcohol level. The good thing about alcohol testing is that they are easy to perform and are really accurate. They are also easy to conduct. An alcohol test allows the proper authority to easily know if a person was driving impaired or not, which makes it easier to address the problem. These alcohol tests are really very helpful in preventing more road accidents from happening.

By way of these tests, hopefully the number of drunk drivers will be lessened and casualties will decrease. There is absolutely no benefit to be gained from driving drunk, so it is just best to avoid doing so altogether.

Fractional Skin Resurfacing Treatments

Fractional CO2 laser ablation has grown in popularity as an alternative for some to traditional plastic surgery. What do Cosmetic Dermatologists want to know about C02 fractional treatments?

Treating Specific Conditions:

1. Reliant Ultrapulse DeepFx is best for vertical lip (smokers) lines, deep wrinkles, acne scars. The fractional laser treats deep and stimulates more collagen and ablates more tissue for more tightening.

2. Reliants ActiveFx is better for more superficial pigment and more surface textural problems

3. For Stria (Stretch Marks): Use ActiveFx: 80-100 mj, density 1-2. Use Density 2 for thicker Stria. (Note: Do NOT use the DeepFx for Stria.)

4. For Melasma: Medical experts don’t recommend treating Malasma at this time. (See below for current thoughts or changes.) This may change. Melasma is a whole topic an issue by itself.

5. Tattoos: DeepFx might be good for resistant Tattoos

Pre and Post Treatment Tips:

1. Use mild moisturizers to avoid acne flare-ups.

2. No need to use Aquaphor or Vasoline. Mild moisturizers are usually enough.

3. Be circumspect of the Lanolin in the Aquaphor.

4. Using Aveeno Water Gel can lessen downtime up to a day!

5. Post TotalFx Treatment: Use “Soaks” every 3-4 hours for comfort.

6. Post Care: Use Cold ice packs or chilled air cooler for 30-45 min after treatment for patient comfort.

7. Use Valtrex for all patients. (One case of disseminated herpes on the face won’t make your patients happy.) Might use Acyclovir since it costs much less (Four Dollars at Walmart!).

8. Check all patients by phone the next day, this makes you both feel better.

9. Don’t give pain medications after treatment. If they have pain, you want to know about it and see them. They should not have pain for more than a few hours. Prolonged pain suggests infection: bacterial, viral, or fungal.

10. Use Pliaglis mixed with Cetaphil cleanser or moisturizer. 90% Pliaglis and 10% cleanser or moisturizer in the mix.

11. Experts worry about Lidocaine toxicity. Compounded Lidocaine works as well or better than Pliaglis. Pliaglis costs $60 per treatment. Compounded Lidocaine usually costs only about $6 per treatment.

12. Experts do NOT routinely prescribe oral antibiotics unless indicated for an acne outbreak. Keflex 500 mg TID, Doxycycline 100 mg BID, Erythromycin to prevent outbreaks.

13. Sunscreens: Use everyday after skin is healed. Wear your hat and stay out of sun.

14. Use a good UVA blocker as further protection.

Fractional C02 lasers can produce great results if used correctly like any technology, it’s not perfect.

Gum Chewing & Teeth Whitening?

Many of us get it done, chiefly while we’re stressed or under anxiety (and who is not under constant worry these days?) Severe gum chewing, grinding your teeth, gnawing on your fingernails - yet these are generally harmless patterns, right?

Maybe not. Most of these relatively innocent habits may easily cause or aggravate Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders, a group of tortuous problems surrounding the joint of the mouth. Left un-mended, TMJ issues might lead to a host of conditions ranging from firmness, hearing pain, head aches, clicking noise in the jaw or perhaps locked jaws. So there’s more threatened compared with worn out teeth enamel after you tighten up and grind your teeth together or constantly chew even sugarless gum.

Howcome is TMJ dangerous? Teeth grinding and clenching enhances wear along the cartilage lining of the TMJ. The confusing aspect of the dependence is the fact that a good number individuals which mill their teeth seem to be unconscious of the behavior, or simply the habit takes place primarily while they are asleep. A dental professional may possibly discover telltale evidence of teeth wear-but until somebody points it out, their solitary hint might be awakening in the early morning with chin or ear pain.

Aside from the particular affliction, continuous TMJ troubles may well trigger the jaw and tooth to literally become out of line. People might complain that it is tough to uncover an appropriate bite or simply that their teeth no longer manage to perfectly “fit”.

In the event that people chew on one part inside their mouth (due to soreness or untreated teeth discomfort) it can lead toTMJ problems.

Progressively, laser clinic and spa providers, massage therapists and cosmetic companies are the leading source for people who are wanting to alleviate their pressure and uncover a more enjoyable and well balanced lifestyle. It’s useful to realize these signs or symptoms, because it could be beneficial to assist yourself and other people to observe the signs of this quite uncomfortable affliction.

Medical Collection Firms Help Software Developers Sell Product

iVolution Medical Systems, a West Hampton, NY-based health care systems firm, is taking a different approach. The four-year-old company, started by former Wall Street consultants to the health care industry, entered the medical receivables space by acquiring experienced billing and collections companies. First there was Professional Health care Billing Services (PHB) of Palm Springs, California in March, and then Continental Collection Services of New York, earlier this month (iVolution Medical Systems Acquires Continental Collection Services, May 13).

Despite the regulatory uncertainty surrounding the health care industry, iVolution co-chair and chief financial officer Vince Pipia told insideARM that the medical billing and collection industry is ripe for consolidation. We think (medical billing and collections businesses) are all good cash generators, and they have a coveted relationship with physicians, Pipia said.

Particularly, its that relationship that Pipia wants to capitalize on to provide joined billing and collections services to health care providers as they transition to health care information systems. Electronic medical records, billing, e-prescriptions and instant messaging are amid the solutions offered by the company. Our goal is to build and grow medical billing to cross-sell technology.

In the year since iVolution introduced its products to the market, Pipia said some of iVolutions technology is gaining traction among its pediatricians. Likewise, iVolutions billing and collections clients are enjoying the benefits of its free instant message technology.

Since conversion to electronic medical records was labeled as the one change that the entire health care industry agrees can boost efficiencies and lower costs, dozens of companies have been working to develop technology solutions. Still, only eight % of health care providers operate fully functioning electronic medical record systems, Pipia said.

Most EMR (electronic medical records) are expensive, Pipia said. Analyst Michael Klozotsky said he expects more ARM industry consolidations and acquisitions as some company owners look to leave the business to avoid regulatory changes that will come with health reform. However, the health industrys aspiration to use more health information technology and the Obama administrations commitment to helping fund the transition leaves plenty of opportunity for companies that can help health care providers comply with new technology mandates, he said.

What is a Chair Seat Lift?

Chair seat lift? Do you have any idea what it is? Some of us may already know about electric chair lifts. Seat lifts may appear to be the same thing but there’s a difference. Depending on your preference and purpose, you may want to make use of a seat lift instead.

Electric Chair Lifts

Reviewing first on what chair lifts are before checking out what a seat lift is could help. As most of us would already know, electric chair lifts are finely upholstered and cushioned seats for the elderly or people that have mobility problems. By operating a button, you can easily lift the chair to a certain degree to make it easier for you to get up.

It is also possible to recline chair lifts up to a particular angle. The angle of recline is dependent upon whether you want a chair that can only slightly recline or one that can fully recline. These chairs also usually include footrests for a more comfortable position. Some have extra features like heat control and built in massage tools.

Appearance is one thing that makes electric chair lifts perfect as living room furniture or in a nursing home. These chairs though can be very expensive. The most basic design can cost around $300. Those with full reclining capacity, independent footrest and extra features may cost a thousand dollars or higher.

Chair Seat Lift

Seat lifts are worlds apart from electric chair lifts. Those who arent familiar with it would probably notice that one glaring difference is that seat lifts only cost more or less $200. Thats a lot of savings if you buy a seat lift instead of a full electric chair lift.

You will realize why a seat lift costs so much less if you take a look a bit closer at it. It is actually only the part of the chair that you sit on. It is shaped like a seat cushion with a mechanism that will help you to stand up easily by lifting and supporting a portion of your weight.

Truth is this product wasn’t meant to be just for the elderly. Some individuals who will benefit from this product are people who need to sit down for a long time, people who want added height and the ones who require extra back support.

There’s more to seat lift features than just the price. It is rather portable and can be made compact for transport. You’ll be able to bring this piece anywhere you are from the office to your friend’s house. There is no need to limit you to only one room in one house. There is greater flexibility with a chair seat lift.

Weighing Your Options

You don’t have to stick to choosing between an electric chair lift and a chair seat lift. Your product choice and purchase will depend on your budget and your current need. You may settle for one or the other if you only have need for one. You may however also settle for both if you can afford both types of chair mobility assistance products.

Organic vs GRP Hygienic Doors: Infection Control And Best Practice In The Specification Of Doors In Hospitals And Healthcare Settings

There have never been more elements to consider when specifying doors in a hospital setting. With the increasing emphasis of contamination risk, HAI and infection control the pressure is on specifiers to ensure they choose doors whose performance is suited for each hospital environment.

Les Blennerhasset, the technical director of Dortek, one of the UK’s leading hygienic door suppliers to hospitals and healthcare centres, offers advice on how specifiers can increase infection control by using glass reinforced polyester (GRP) doors in hospital settings, rather than traditional wood and laminate ones.

“With hygiene and infection control standards rising, traditional painted timber and laminate doors are now being replaced by GRP doors. Thanks to its seamless, moulded, hygienic construction, it is now quickly becoming the material of choice for doors in high risk areas like intensive care and operating theatres, as well as for medium risk areas like laboratories, hydrotherapy pools and recovery suites.

The photos above illustrate some of the potential problems with laminate doors in some environments over the longer term. Both doors were taken from environments where they had been installed in a pharmaceutical company for 3 to 5 years and the bottom of both doors were then exposed to water for a 14 day period. The glue bonding the laminate door, (top) broke down as it’s timber based core rapidly swelled allowing the ingress of water and growth of mould. The GRP door (bottom), seamlessly moulded as a homogenous unit with no organic materials, was unaffected.

Manufactured from millions of glass fibre threads and polyester resin, GRP is a high technology engineering composite that produces a very strong, seamless door. GRP doors are created using a closed moulding process which produces a uniform product, with no holes, crevices or joints that could accommodate bacteria.

In less critical areas, such as office spaces, waiting rooms and corridors, ‘lick and stick’ laminate and timber doors can be perfectly adequate. However, in areas where cleanliness is imperative, organic materials like these are not suitable, and whilst no one would use operating tables, trolleys or hospital benches made from wood, many doors are still manufactured with timber frames and lippings.

In a hospital setting, doors are subject to aggressive use and wear and tear on a regular basis, with trolleys manoeuvred in confined spaces inevitably hitting both the door and its frame. In the past, concerns were purely aesthetic and repairs could be carried out when areas were closed for major maintenance. However, when surfaces are damaged these days there is an immediate risk to infection control that must be dealt with urgently. Whereas laminate and timber doors might need to be replaced in this instance, GRP doors are much stronger, and can be easily and effectively restored to their original state.

GRP doors are not only stronger than their organic counterparts, but also pose less of a hygiene risk and are much easier to keep clean. A chip in a laminate door can expose the organic core of the door, and create a haven for bacteria, making the door impossible to clean and keep clean. GRP doors like those manufactured by Dortek are designed to tolerate the stringent cleaning regimens of hospitals, and unlike organic doors, do not deteriorate when regularly exposed to chlorine releasing agents like VHP (vaporised hydrogen peroxide) and disinfectants.

Specifiers of hospital doors need to rapidly rethink their approach in understanding infection control and user requirements, and those who do not change risk contamination in critical areas. Hospital specifiers should follow the lead of the international pharmaceutical industry, which has already taken the step of replacing timber and laminate doors with GRP as standard in many critical areas.

Dortek are industry leaders in the manufacture and supply of hygienic door systems to the international pharma and healthcare sectors. A selection of excellent guides on specifying hospital doors and infection control in hospitals are available from its hygienic door systems website.
