Types Of Ovarian Cysts Explained

Ovarian Cysts are far more frequent than you might suppose and are caused by a whole host of reasons. Certain women inherit them in their genes because their mother or grandmother developed ovarian cysts, while others can be caused by the use of hormone replacement therapy. There are different types of ovarian cysts that range from fairly frequent and generally harmless to others that should be treated more seriously . Being aware of these types of ovarian cysts and the possible symptoms is key for all women keen to stay on top of their health .

There are two main types of ovarian cysts which are functional and follicular. Functional cysts are by far the most common type and fortunately also the most benign. So if you are diagnosed with functional cysts, you can rest assured that they are not going to be a major threat to your health. In fact in most causes these types of cysts will vanish after a few months and may have no discomforting symptoms at all.

Then there are the follicular cysts which are taken more seriously because they can actually be dangerous. In short a follicular cyst is characterized as one that develops inside a follicle and can fill with fluid making it expand to a large size. These cysts can grow to be quite large in size and also cause few if any symptoms, so it often comes as a bolt from the blue to a woman when she’s getting a regular exam and may be told she has a follicular cyst. Another form of cyst, known as the luteum ovarian cyst is another general occurrence .

These are more relatable to a woman’s menstrual cycle and these are the most dangerous of the three types because they can create a twisting in the ovary. The luteum cysts will usually disappear within a month’s time but is the most likely type of cyst to cause a twisting of the ovary. They can also cause a twisting of the ovary which may result in a blockage of the blood supply. All the factors that cause luteum cysts to develop are not known but there seems to be some evidence to suggest that taking the fertility drug clomiphene citrate may increase the development of luteum cysts .

So the cysts mentioned above are the most general types of ovarian cysts that a woman may develop. Even some women who go in every six months as is recommended for a routine exam may not have cysts caught before they have grown and are causing a problem. Ovarian cancer is a major killer in the world today, and the main reason it’s so deadly is because women aren’t staying on top of their health and the cancer isn’t detected until it’s too late. To this extent, malignant cysts must be identified quickly and treated as they can ultimately lead to ovarian cancer.
